Blinking in surprise as Snowfall shouted at him, Vineleaf was confused. Trouble is coming to every Clan in the forest, he thought, nodding slowly. Pricking his ears and listening to Snowfall and Blizzardheart argue, he narrowed his eyes. "I think we should tell only our leaders and deputies," he said, siding with Snowfall. "The Clans deserve to know, but only when we know more about what's going to happen! Right, Fernspirit?" He turned to his apprentice to back him up. "I just want to get back to my Clan so I can tell Finchstar!" Turning, he began padding away from the moonstone, flicking his tail for Fernspirit to follow him. He stopped, though, when Mountainfrost spoke.

Mountainfrost sighed when Vineleaf joined the argument. "Everyone, be quiet!" she commanded. Not caring if they listened or not, she continued. "Blizzardheart, everyone deserves to know, but I think we should only tell the warriors , apprentices, kits, and elders once we know more about what will happen. It'll be something bad -- oh, so bad --" she shivered, blinking slowly in despair. "-- but we can't just go home and shout 'DOOM IS COMING,' now, could we?" She knew, at this point, that shw was pretty much taking control, and that was fine with her. Mountainfrost didn't ask Fernspirit's opinion -- yes, she had her full medicine cat name, but she was still just an apprentice. "Blizzardheart," she continued, trying to stay as respectful as possible; she knew the WindClanner wouldn't react well to this. "Please don't tell the entire Clan about this. The rest of us don't think you should, and WindClan, if they knew, would just tell the other Clans." Wincing as she waited for Blizzardheart's fuming response, she decided to ignore whatever he said. She was right; the rest of them had said they thought they should only tell the highest members of the Clans. And though she might be younger, Blizzardheart (in Mountainfrost's mind, at least) didn't have the best judgement. He was always rude, disobeying and belligerent. "Anyway, what does the prophecy mean?" she said, pointedly chancing the subject. "Doom, yes -- but what kind of doom? Disease? Fire? Maybe even a rogue attack?" she suggested, sighing as she reeled off a list of possible threats. There are way too many of those.

Fernspirit shrunk away from Snowfall as he answered her whispered question. We won't tell everyone? Her fur bristled slightly at the thought of it. They had to tell everyone! What if the threat was a group of foxes, or badgers? What if it was rogues or another group of cats? Warriors could easily be killed on a hunting patrol if they weren't warned to be careful! A kit or apprentice could wander away from camp to their death! She couldn't let that happen! Vineleaf's words seemed distant until he spoke to her. "No, I don't agree," she said, "Everyone needs to know, why should we keep it from them?" she addressed all the cats in the cavern. "I don't know about everyone else here, but I have a brother that is a warrior. I would not be able to live with myself if I knew this prophecy, didn't warn him, and he was injured or killed. Don't you all agree with me?" she waited quietly and then Mountainfrost spoke. She ignored the cat as she went on and on about how they shouldn't tell the entire Clan. Then she questioned the meaning of the prophecy. They were all curious, she was sure. "It might even be worse," she offered, "A fox or badger attack..." she trailed off into silence.

Snowfall inhaled deeply, fighting his more violent, reckless side. "Look, Blizzardheart," he meowed in what he hoped was a reasonable tone of voice, "and you, too, Fernspirit -- telling everyone will not benefit them. They will panic. We don't know what kind of doom is going to happen to us, either; they wouldn't know what to look out for. Anyway, we're not even the leaders of our Clans. We shouldn't be deciding how much everyone knows." Yes, we should! an inner part of him yelped, but he mentally told it to shut up and take a seat. Turning to Fernspirit, the white tom added, "So you have a brother who's a warrior. So you'd tell him, and have him panic -- or, if he's not the panicking sort, start looking for the wrong kind of danger and get slaughtered? If I had a brother who was a warrior, I'd just tell him to be careful. Not that you should be more concerned for your brother than the rest of the Clan, of course." His blue eyes flashed a warning at the younger medicine cat.

The white tom let out a low growl, and flickered his tail. He didn't have anything to say, but he felt anger and disgust in his stomach. He showed his white, sharp teeth at the ShadowClan medicine cat and left with the other medicine cats, for it was time to go.
