name... Numbers
gender... Tom
age... 27 moons
group... Rogue Band
rank... Second-In-Command
reference... A black-furred tom with copper eyes.
appearance... Numbers has soft and thick, but short, jet-black fur the color of coal and ravens and other black stuff. Not a spot of fur on him is any color but black. His paw-pads, nose, and eyes are his only non-black features. His pads are a pale rose color; his nose a bright pink. And Numbers's eyes are a dark auburn color, with a hint of rust-red -- the color of a three-year-old (at the oldest) penny. The second-in-command of Thorn's rogues is very slightly on the small side, and has a fairly average build. His claws are of average length but are quite sharp and deadly.
personality... Numbers is a nervous, worrisome cat, but he'd actually choose fight over flight. He's easily frightened in dutiful obedience, and rarely defies authority; however, he's also quite confident and commanding when the situation he's in calls for that approach. He's a tough, fierce cat, his feral attitude shaped by Thistle's way of raising him to survive in the forest, but that doesn't mean he's incredibly valiant and courageous. Afraid of Thorn and her ideas, Numbers is only too happy to be the one enforcing her orders instead of being enforced at (as he was before). He loves a good brawl, but only as sport; when he or his friends get hurt, he's always paranoid that they'll die. He's thoughtful and sharp, and is mostly sweet but can be firm when necessary.
history... Tres (Three) was the only survivor of the three-kitten litter of two strays, former kittypets, named Gatito (Kitten) and Diego. His two sisters, Uno (One) and Dos (Two), died at two moons from a case of greencough. Not belonging to a Clan and unsure of whether their Twolegs would welcome them back, Gatito and Diego had no choice but to look on as the young cats died. They stood and watched together, proudly but sadly, as Tres left the family to found his own one.
Deux (Two) was the daughter of Pierre and Beauté (Beauty), two housecats living in a family of Parisian Twolegs. At fifteen moons, she left the house, and at twenty moons, she ran into Tres. The two became instant friends, and when Deux turned twenty-five moons, she had a litter of three kittens. At Tres's suggestion, Deux named the only she-cat Una Esperanza (One Hope) and the black-and-white tom Dos Colores (Two Colors). The last kitten was named Números (Numbers). Later Deux would leave Tres and have another kitten with a tom named Éclat (Brightness), and she would name it Nombres (Numbers) in memory of her completely black son.
Números, Una Esperanza, and Dos Colores had an easy life. Their parents caught what they could, which wasn't always enough, but they spoiled their kittens and never made them do anything (though they taught them how to). But one day Dos Colores took his brother and sister to the river. He leaped from stepping stone to stepping stone, while his more cowardly siblings remained on the bank, and accidentally fell in. Una Esperanza rushed back to tell Deux and Tres and get their help, but by the time they arrived, Dos Colores had been washed away by the current.
Números was dazed for the next few days. Afterwards he was in shape again, but he thought that nothing worse could happen. He was wrong. A week after Dos Colores's death, the river washed his body up onto the shore in a violent storm, after crashing it against the bank in a wave as if it were making sure he was dead. Una Esperanza was ignoring her parents' orders to stay away from the river and was chasing a butterfly very close to the water. Números was many fox-lengths away from the river, watching his sister. She stumbled upon Dos Colores's body and, stunned, didn't notice the butterfly drifting away from her -- across the river.
When she tore her gaze from her brother's corpse, she spotted it fluttering above a stepping stone. All common sense gone, she charged for it, blaming it for her brother's death. She pinned it to a stepping stone, but then slipped and fell into the river. Números ran to his parents, knowing deep inside that it was hopeless. The sad look exchanged between them confirmed his suspicions. Una Esperanza was gone like her brother.
Furious at his parents and scared of the river, Números fled from their home near RiverClan territory and met an older, but still young, tabby tomcat named Thistle. Thistle was a proud, rather bloodthirsty tom, but friendly to cats that weren't hostile to him. Thistle told Números to give himself a more local-sounding name. Números obliged, and proclaimed himself "Numbers," for Tres had told him that was what "números" meant. Thistle approved, and appointed himself Numbers's sworn protector since the kitten was too nervous from his siblings' deaths to fight off attackers.
Much later, Numbers and Thistle met a cat named Thorn, who told them about the band of rogues she was creating. Impressed by Thistle's ferocity and Numbers's devotion to Thistle, she welcomed them into her Clan-hating group and introduced them to the others: Chaos, Diamond, Club, Spade, Ace, Smoke, and Joker. Thistle was named second-in-command; since Thorn called herself the Queen of Destruction, Thistle saw it fit to go by "the King of Blood," "King Thistle," or "Thistle, King of Blood." Numbers was given the rank of messenger.
After the attack on Eaglestar of WindClan, Numbers was devastated to see that Thistle lay dead. But he remained confident as Thorn appointed him second-in-command, glad that he was being allowed to follow in his late friend (and idol)'s pawsteps. Naturally jumpy, paranoid, timid, and obedient, he knew he wasn't Thorn's ideal second, but he also knew that, with a little practice, he could become commanding, smart, brave, and ferocious -- just like Thistle.
